“My approach to photography is simple; the wildlife is the focus, and not the shot.”
From Barnaby:
I’m a latecomer to the world of photography, having only picked up a camera for the first time in 2019. My interest in the natural world however is a lifelong one. I don’t know for definite what my earliest memory is, but I’m certain it would be one of toddling around rock pools near my childhood home in Cornwall. Those rock pools formed a deep and abiding love for nature that’s been with me ever since.
My connection to the natural world has been further strengthened by a lifetime of surfing. Life as a surfer is driven by natural rhythms of swell, wind and tides, and gives so many incredible encounters with nature it’s impossible not to forge a strong connection. When I’m not surfing or free-diving I’m usually up to my elbows in a bog somewhere looking for wildlife on land.
I’ve been incredibly lucky with my time in nature, and had some amazing experiences. I took to photography to try and help me document those experiences in the hopes that others may enjoy sharing them. In doing so I found a new passion, and adore using my camera now.
My approach to photography is simple; the wildlife is the focus, and not the shot. My number one priority is never to disturb or alter natural behaviour by my actions. I never use any form of baiting or set-up, as my aim is to candidly capture genuine moments in nature.
2019 was a big year for me, as alongside taking my first shaky photos with a DSLR I completed my masters degree in ecology and conservation. One of the key learning points from my studies was that reforming our connection to nature is vital if we are to conserve it. This really inspired me not to take my own experiences for granted anymore, and to record them through photography and my blog. I feel that my bond is stronger than ever as a result.
I now live in the Western Isles with my wife and our rescue dog and cat. My photography documents the wildlife we find in these incredible islands.
