“I can't think of anything better than being out in the countryside armed with my camera (and waterproofs & midge repellent!) watching and photographing the amazing creatures we share our planet with.”
Karen is a wildlife photographer based in the Scottish Highlands. Karen’s been pursuing her love of wildlife seriously since 2015 and in 2019 quit her job in Glasgow with the BBC to become a full-time photographer and guide. For Karen it’s not about ticking off species but about getting to know a select few, in this way it’s possible to learn much more about them and photograph interesting behaviours not just posed shots. Karen aspires to capture emotive images; images that capture the essence of the animal she’s photographing.
Living in a semi-rural location in the Highlands has allowed Karen to explore her local patch, the highlight of which has been discovering and nurturing a group of red squirrels in the woods behind her house. She’s gone from 3 to 8 as well as having another 4 now visiting her garden. It’s early days yet but it’s been fascinating to watch the squirrels throughout the year, learning more about the species and their individual personalities.
However, the animal closest to Karen’s heart is the mountain hare. She first photographed these incredible animals in July 2016 whilst on a photography workshop and instantly fell in love. It’s such a privilege to be able to sit with a hare in such beautiful surroundings as it behaves completely naturally grooming, grazing and snoozing. Even better there are no hides and no baiting, it’s all about field craft and gaining the trust of the individual. The hares are fantastic all year round and it’s been especially wonderful to watch and follow a group of leverets through the summer months as they grow to adulthood. Karen now offers mountain hare guiding in order to share her love of the hares with others.
