Katie Goldsbrough (Ranger Katie)
Katie is an enthusiastic and passionate wildlife conservationist and ecologist based in Essex, UK. Katie’s career has led to her working as a ranger managing a nature reserve for a wildlife trust, completing an undergraduate degree in zoology, a master’s degree in wildlife conservation and starting a revolution against using plastics in tree planting. Katie is an advocate for women working in practical conservation, who aims to inspire and encourage women into the practical wildlife sector. On women’s day 2021, Katie and fellow female rangers shared an honest conservation on The Wildlife Trusts IGTV about some of the obstacle’s women face in practical roles.
Alongside her ranger role, Katie volunteers as a bat ambulance driver and a trainee bat carer with her local bat group. This involves the transport and rehabilitation of injured or grounded bats within the Essex area, a hugely rewarding responsibility. She is batty for bats!
Katie created her website & blog ‘Ranger Katie’ back in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time where connection with nature has never been so important. This project was started to excite, inspire, and educate people from all backgrounds, about wildlife conservation, campaigns, and careers. Wildlife and careers in this area should be accessible for everybody, and this is one of Katies main objectives. Katie’s master’s thesis took her on a journey of exploring the use of plastics in modern day tree planting- specifically plastic tree guards. Her mission = change the way we use tree guards, modernise tree planting and make our treescapes a plastic-free environment.
Katie has featured in WILD magazine, Bloom in Doom magazine, The Wild Explorer podcast, Be Curious Beings podcast, and various Wildlife Trusts social media takeovers over the last year.
